This is such a hard one, Shayna, thank you for articulating it! What's so frustrating is that I think many people feel that there should be some sort of legal "middle ground" whether it's for very senior "consultant" type freelancers and/or for part-time work that has some modicum of flexibility and self-determination, that doesn't render one completely out to sea w/r/t health care or taxes etc. But of course, what it's turned into is something terrible and exploited.

A bit ago I reread Free Agent Nation - it's sobering how much of that "middle ground" never came to be, and also how little of the supportive infrastructure Pink envisioned also never came to be.
